Empowering Visually Impaired Employees: A Refresher Workshop Success Story

In an era where digital skills and professional development are paramount, UCO Bank took a significant step towards empowering its visually impaired (VI) employees. On January 29th and 30th, 2024, the bank’s Training Centre in Chennai hosted a transformative two-day workshop aimed at reinvigorating the computer and soft skills of 12 VI employees from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Tailored Learning Experience

The workshop, conducted by HTBF with resource people Ms. Gayatri, Mr. Sakthivel, and Ms. Pooja, was meticulously designed to meet the specific needs of the participants. Two weeks prior to the event, a Google form was circulated to assess the skill levels and requirements of the attendees, allowing for the development of customized learning modules.

Day 1: Building Foundations

The inaugural day kicked off with a focus on fundamental computer operations and MS-Word skills. Participants engaged in practical exercises covering essential tasks such as document creation, formatting, and table management. The day continued with soft skills training, incorporating energizing activities that targeted listening skills, team building, emotional intelligence, and assertiveness.

A highlight of Day 1 was the introduction to assistive devices and mobility solutions. Participants gained exposure to various tools like smart canes, low vision keyboards, and applications such as Lazzarillo, Visor, and Be My Eyes. The day concluded with a mobility session, imparting crucial cane techniques for independent movement.

Day 2: Advanced Skills and Practical Application

The second day delved into more advanced topics, beginning with a comprehensive Excel skills session. Participants learned about data entry, formatting, and pivotal features like pivot tables. Soft skills training continued with scenario-based activities, self-esteem exercises, and customer relations role-play, emphasizing both formal and informal communication.

The final computer session covered critical professional skills such as formal email writing, document attachment, and file management techniques. These practical skills are essential for the day-to-day tasks of bank employees.

This workshop serves as a shining example of how targeted training can empower VI employees, enhancing their skills and confidence in the workplace. By investing in such initiatives, organizations like UCO Bank are not only supporting their employees but also fostering a more inclusive and skilled workforce.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to UCO Bank and Cognizant Foundation for their invaluable support in making this empowering workshop a reality. Their commitment to inclusivity and employee development is truly commendable.
